What does the bible actually say about heaven and hell?

The Bible
Always Sunny in Philadelphia asked:

I will admit that I have not read the bible much, so I do not know too much about it. So my question is, what in the bible makes us believe there really is a heaven and a hell? We think of heaven as a great beautiful place, and hell as an ugly horrible place. What passages in the bible give us this image of heaven and hell?

It says that in heaven its more peacefuller because you’ve been grateful and willing to try in your past life and hell is when someone has done something cruel and horrible in their past life.

Usually people will say ‘ When you die your going to (either hell or) heaven’.

    Hope I could help!

  21. John_D Says:

There isn’t much to go on.

“Heaven” is never described. Most people read a symbolic description of the “New Jerusalem” in Revelation and assume that it is heaven (it isn’t), or they read about the throne of God in Revelation and assume it is heaven (it isn’t, at least not exactly). But there really isn’t much in there about heaven. In fact, you will be hard pressed to find any passages that even mention going to heaven when you die.

Hell isn’t much better. Jesus mentions hel quite a bit, but he used the term “Gehenna,” which, in other ancient Jewish writings, is usually a figure of speech referring to a difficult (but temporary) trial or period of suffering. In other cases Jesus uses the term “the grave,” and there is no reason to assume that it is talking about anything other than the hole that folks are buried in.

The only description we have of hell is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, which is already highly symbolic and could just as easily refer to something closer to purgatory than actual hell.

The Old Testament has little or no information on either heaven or hell. The common belief before the time of Christ was that people went to “sleep” when they died, and awaited the resurrection of the dead on the day of judgment.

  22. MakeSure Says:

The dead are resurrected resurrection who will be tried nor does he common grave of two places heaven or earthdepending on their lifeassignment what really is pagan.

  23. Ads Says:

The lake of fire which means the dead that were in other words death death death death and complete destruction in them so contrary.
The grave cannot literally be abolished is death heaven is therefore symbolic of my questions.
